[Sepulchre of a parent dear!]

Sepulchre of a parent dear!
Oft conscious of my lone complaint,
Oh! treasure still the holy tear:—
Chaste tribute to a martyr'd saint!
Ah! what can hopeless anguish more—
On earth—in heav'n without a friend—
Than thus her guiltless crime deplore,
And sighs and tears repentant blend?
Oh faithless Love!—oh constant woe!
Mysterious suffering ne'er to cease!
And must the tears that ceaseless flow
Ne'er lull the mangl'd soul to peace?
Then come again, sad soother, Death!
Again I seek thy gloomy cave;
Resign the painful—fruitless breath
Which heav'n for lingering sufferance gave!
Sepulchre of a parent dear!
Oft conscious of my lone complaint,
Oh! treasure still the holy tear:—
Chaste tribute to a martyr'd saint!
