EPIGRAM CCLXXXIV.
[When a dull, drowsy orator drawls dismally dry]
ESTO PERPETUA.
When a dull, drowsy orator drawls dismally dry,
He's as long as to-day and to-morrow, we cry;
But perhaps we don't think what enormous extent,
By the phrase of to-day and to-morrow, is meant:
From cradles to coffins, survive as we may,
With the oldest amongst us 'tis yet, but to-day;
And as for to-morrow, how long that may last,
Is a point, into absolute obscurity cast;
376
We know it by name—and that's all we can know;
Since thro' life's whole career, which we've hitherto run,
It has still been beginning—but never begun!
