SHALL WE EVER BE HAPPY AGAIN?

I

Shall we ever be happy again?
Shall we ever wake in the morning,
Without the ominous gloom,
Which seems the heart's sure warning
Of something sad to come?
Shall we ever lie down to slumber,
Without that thought of care,
To-morrow will add to the number
Of ills that we must bear?
Shall we ever be happy again?

II

Shall we ever be happy again?
Shall we ever in summer hours
Walk under the trees near home,
And gather the fragrant flow'rs,
And talk of bright days to come?
Unseen, shall I know I am near thee,
By hearing thy cheerful voice?
Oh! sing as I used to hear thee,
And I shall again rejoice;
Shall we ever be happy again?
