Longer Hours

In its regular meeting Tuesday the Committee
on Fraternities passed a rule which
would allow female guests in the common
rooms of fraternity houses all hours of the
day except those between 3 a.m. and
8 a.m. To become effective, the rule must
be approved by President Shannon.

One of the main objections we have
heard voiced to the rule is that such an
extension of hours in which female guests
may be entertained is but one more step
toward fraternities' ultimate suicide. Whether
or not this is the case, which we doubt it
is, the choice of whether or not to "commit
suicide" should certainly lie with the
fraternities. Fraternity men have indicated
overwhelmingly in a poll that they favor
such extension of the hours, and so the time
has come to allow them the privilege of
accepting the responsibility which would be
required of them under the new rule.

The committee has debated these matters
intensely for weeks. Mr. Shannon has the
committee's recommendation. We do not
see how he could presume to reject it.
