[Jesus, the word, by which alone]

Man shall not live by bread alone, &c. —iv. 4.

Jesus, the word, by which alone
We live, doth from Thy mouth proceed:
The bread, unbless'd by Thee, is stone,
The stone which Thou hast bless'd, is bread:

Life of the death-devoted race,
The bread of life vouchsafe to give,
And quicken'd by Thy word of grace
The life of holiness we live.
