Euphrenia or the Test of Love

A poem by William Sharp

XXXVI.

Calmed by her pious exercise,
Her virgin couch she sought,
But sleep was powerless 'gainst a mind
So occupied by thought;
She tried to think of earlier scenes;
Alas! the attempt was vain;
The sterile past served but to bring
The present back again;
She could not school her memory,
Nor banish from its seat
The thought of him who first had taught
Her maiden heart to beat.
