Dear Sir:

The recent editorial in The
Cavalier Daily entitled "Irrelevance"
reflects a clear lack of
knowledge of how Student Council
functions. It is true that for some
time Council has addressed itself to
issues outside of the University.
Never have these issues taken more
than a small portion of Council's
time. Our primary concerns have
been: 1. to aid efforts to recruit
Black students a Black Assistant
Dean of Admissions, to establish
and fund a transition program and a
spring tour of high school juniors.
2. to aid the smooth transition to a
fully coeducational University, 3.
to secure greater student control
over Student Activity Funds, 4. to
seek solutions to problems that
students have encountered in University
housing, 5. to review the
direction in which the Athletic
Department is moving with the idea
of insuring that Virginia does not
subvert the concept of the athlete
- to cite but a few examples. Yes,
we even have addressed ourselves to
the use of White Rock Cola rather
than Coke in University vending
machines because we were concerned
that students were paying
increasing amounts of money for
inferior products. Perhaps the editors
of The Cavalier Daily do not
share our concern in this area.

I note in closing that as the
elected representatives of the student
body the members of the
Council have the right and obligation
to address themselves to issues
of concern to students in the
University, community and nation.
Students at the same time must
advise their representatives of how
they feel on these various issues.
Rather than writing about problems,
the Council seeks to solve
them.
