Impressive Line

An important part of Virginia's
league leading rushing offense,
which averages 214.0 yards a game,
is the hard-blocking offensive line.
Offensive guard, Bob Buchanan,
still aches from a Wake Forest
game injury, but there is a chance
that he will help tackles Greg
Shelly and Chuck Hammer open
the holes in South Carolina's defense.
Unfortunately Bob Rannigan,
flankerback, is now lost
for the season with a broken arm
suffered in the Duke game.

The defensive game should prove
to be a hot contest. Defensively
an average of 15.7 points per
game have been given up by the
spirited Wahoo defensive, while
South Carolina surrenders an average
of 13.6 points. Bob Paczkoski
and Mal MacGregor at the
linebacker positions continue to
lead a strong Virginia defensive
unit that has only allowed eight
touchdowns.

However, the defense also suffered
a personnel loss last week
as Bill Lockwood, a newly shifted
defensive safety, had to have cartilage
removed.

Defensively and offensively the
game this weekend should prove as
Coach Blackburn put it, "a real
donnybrook" and as Frank Quayle
stated, "We have the chance Saturday
to prove what a good team
we really are."

South Carolina's season stands
3-2, but they are tied with the
nationally ranked N. C. State for
the ACC lead at 2-0. The Wahoos
have compiled a 2-2 season overall
and 1-1 in the conference, and are
looking to make it 2-1 in the ACC
in a game that could be the turning
point of the season.
