St George for England, we were wont to say;
And, to that Name, assign'd a solemn day
We knew not why: But, if what's now begun
Shall with sincerity be carried on,
It did, perhaps, by way of Allegory,
Presage what will produce an Actual Story;
That shall in future times, deserve much better
Mens credit morally, than in the Letter
That Fable did: For, we may hope (unless
Good probabilities have ill success)
A Champion of this Name shall free us from
That Dragon which infests all Christendome,
And, set a Bar to their malignant-pow'r,
Who threaten this Republike to devour.
