EPIGRAM CCLVIII.
[All Turkey's mosques, aloft in air]
Καλα πεφανται.
All Turkey's mosques, aloft in air,
A vast half-moon exalted bear,
With gilded splendor gay:—
So much for outward signs of grace;
What piety may within take place,
Is not for us to say.
A vast half-moon exalted bear,
With gilded splendor gay:—
So much for outward signs of grace;
What piety may within take place,
Is not for us to say.
But when from things at home we guess,
Plain truth, I fear, must needs confess,
What proofs too obvious vouch;
That, if Religion's visible work,
Be all appearance with the Turk,
With us—'tis scarce so much!
Plain truth, I fear, must needs confess,
351
That, if Religion's visible work,
Be all appearance with the Turk,
With us—'tis scarce so much!
