XVII.

“By my great father's fame I swear,
(With words of fire the Hero said)
“This votive sword shall free the fair!”
He spake, and kist the unsheath'd blade,
And rais'd the suppliant from the ground.
Loud acclamation burst around:
Joanna, rising, still'd the sound.
“By glory's call, by pity's tear,
“Resistless Edward! Constance aid!
“Hero! the rights of kings revere!
“Fix on her throne the royal Maid!”
