FRIDAY

The Chase (Wilson Hall;
6:30 and 9 p.m.; 75 cents $1) A
film of almost uncontrolled
hysteria and fantasy that is
only interesting because it is so
excessive. The society and the
people in this film are not just
corrupt, but almost mythically
evil. Arthur Penn's appetite for
messages is large but he almost
chokes on this screenplay
(Lillian Hellman had some part
in writing it). The violence is so
extreme and the Southerners
of this Texas town so sexually
obsessed that Penn almost
manages to make the film work
as a self-parody, but he doesn't
quite have the sense of humor
to bring it off: after all he is no
Douglas Sirk.
