Bail Fund
Gordon Calvert's motion setting up the bail
fund for University students embodies a new
dimension for the Student Council. By providing
bail for students who cannot raise their
own, the Council will be engaged in activity
which is purely service, which is designed
exclusively to help out students in a bind.
Such activity is certainly appropriate for the
Council; we congratulate Mr. Calvert for
making his motion and the Council for accepting
it.
The $4 charge for using the fund, however,
is a little puzzling. If it were to be used to
cover court costs of some sort, it would
certainly be justified. But the motion says
that it is to be added to the fund. Bail money
is never expended - it is rather put up as
collateral and then returned. Why, then, is it
necessary to add to the principle? The money
in the fund was provided by the students
(through the Student Activities Fund) anyway,
so we suggest that they should be able to
use it without charge. We hope that the
Council will consider this matter and, if
nothing else, decide to refund the money at
least to students who are subsequently found
innocent of the charges against them.
