Cavalier 'Slobs'
Insult Suffolk
This article appeared in the Sunday,
September 22, issue of the Suffolk
News-Herald. We reprint it as it
appeared for the interest of our
readers. -ed.
Last Saturday a young man
called the News-Herald office to ask
for some information. He identified
himself as a member of the pledge
class of a fraternity at the
University of Virginia and said he
and some of his fellow pledges were
here to "investigate" some things.
On the way back from lunch
that day, I saw some neatly dressed
boys of early college age taking a
tour of downtown, and when the
call came in I decided those I had
seen constituted the pledge class.
It was not that the questions
were inappropriate as much as that
they were asked in an abrupt and
rude manner. The caller made it
rather plain the trip to Suffolk was
part of an initiation rite. When I
could not give him the answers he
wanted, he badgered me a little and
then hung up.
But on the way home as I was
headed out on Pinner Street I
followed a little foreign car with
University of Virginia parking
stickers on it bumper. The fellows
inside looked very much like the
boys I saw on the street earlier.
As we went up the Pinner Street
bridge they pitched out about a
dozen beer cans over the rail and
then a little farther on dumped a
bag full of peanut hulls on the
street. The driver then tromped
down on the accelerator and
speeded out Rt. 460.
The slobs. I guess it just goes to
show that one can be as nasty and
ill-mannered in a coat and tie as in
one of those hippie get-ups.
