DISCUSSION OF THE PROJECTED GROWTH OF THE UNIVERSITY
A discussion of the Preliminary Meeting of the Board of Visitors which was held on June 2, 1971 followed. It was the consensus of the Board that the programs and projections that have been developed for the University should be carried forward as presented to the Governor and his Budget Advisers on May 26, 1971.
In the discussion, Mr. Lawrence Lewis stressed the importance involving the Board of Visitors in the University's long range planning. Mr. C. Stuart Wheatley expressed the view that the University must accommodate to population pressures, and that the size of the enrollment is not really under the control of the Board or the University. Mr. William S. Potter agreed with the view of Mr. Wheatley. He further pointed out that the University is not "striving to achieve the 18,000 figure".
Mr. Edwin Mattern stressed the point that the 18,000 figure is not a goal that we are working toward, but he feels that this point is not well understood in Western Virginia.
Mr. Barrett warned that in order for the quality of educational opportunity at the University to remain high, adequate funds must be provided. He warned against diluting the quality of offerings. He also expressed concern about the possible consequences of rejecting a large number of well qualified Virginia applicants.
Mr. Santarelli asked if it is necessary to limit admission more severely until additional facilities are available. The President replied that staff work on these questions is continuing, and that the matter will have to come back to the Board for consideration at future meetings. The additional staff work is especially necessary in view of the recently developed space standards.
