FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS

The beginning of this year's
football season finds last year's
all-ACC split end Dave Sullivan
and slotback Chuck Belic
trying to make it in the
professional ranks.

Dave, with the Redskins,
and Chuck, with the Browns,
accounted for 89 complete
passes, 1270 total yards and 12
touchdowns in 1972. To offset
the loss of this awesome air
attack is an experienced and
mobile offensive line.

The starters of the interior
corps are center Paul Ryczek,
guards Tom Glassic and Steve
Shawley and the tackles, Dale
Dickerson and John Sims.

The height and weight of
these five averages out to 6-3,
234 lbs. Anchoring either end
of this "steam roller" will be
the ends Ken Shelton and Mike
McGugan.

Quarterbacking will
probably be filled by
sophomore Scott Gardner
while last year's QB, senior
Harrison Davis, attempts to
add some depth to the teams
weakest spot, receiving.

Teaming with Gardner in
the backfield will be tailback
Kent Merritt(the ACC's sprint
champion), fullback Mike
Lacika and slotback Billy
Lanahan.

All of the starters on the
1973 offensive squad are
lettermen along with several of
the reserves. The Cavs should
show some scoring punch this
year and with a little luck,
Virginia's football fortunes
could take a dramatic turn for
the better.

Their fortunes will be tested
immediately on Sept. 8 with a
state battle against VMI
followed in successive weeks
by the ACC team to beat,
Peach Bowl Champ N.C. State,
and a typical Big Eight
powerhouse, the Missouri
Tigers.

Our pre-season
prognostication: 7 wins, 4
defeats.
