Many search programs balk at the introduction of nonstandard or
formatting characters into the text. For the convenience of those who wish to conduct
searches, there is no markup provided with this text, nor even any
indication of italics within the play itself. Italics (or underlines) in
the introduction, notes, and bibliography are indicated with an _underline_
character before and after the affected material. If you wish, you may
substitute your own formatting characters for these as desired, or remove
them. Endnotes are indicated within the text by numbers within braces: { }.
As these may interfere with searches, you may wish to remove them, or, if
you wish to print out a formatted copy, replace them with superscripts. No
pagination or white space has been provided with this edition, and you may
wish to go through it with your word processor before printing out. You
may, if you wish, remove the front and back matter or substitute your own
for that provided. The transcriber knows of no copyright laws that have
been violated in producing this edition; _The Beggar's Opera_ was printed
originally in 1728, and this electronic text follows that of the printed
text of 1765. It is placed in the public domain to aid in scholarship and
teaching as well as reading enjoyment, provided always that the name of the
transcriber remains associated with any copies distributed.
