As on the Cross the dying Saviour hung,
With all the woes of all the ages worn,
And the great burden none but He has borne,
Which with its curse like midnight to him clung;
As in his ears the ribald voices rung,
And pierced the crown less sharply than the scorn;
A little bird one note of comfort sung,
And from His forehead plucked one bitter thorn.
