EPIGRAM CCXLIX.

[“The world is all appearance! mere outside!]

Καλα πεφανται.

The world is all appearance! mere outside!
“A splendid nothing!”—Wisdom long has cry'd.
And what is Wisdom then?—A spider—caught
Ev'n in the very web, herself has wrought!
For if her estimate of the world be wrong,
Wisdom's own word is not worth an old song:—
If right her estimate, 'tis as clearly true,
That Wisdom's self—is but appearance too!
