XXXIX. WHEN NATURE WAKES;

OR, Snowdrops.

When Nature wakes, in Winter's spite,
Beneath her winding-sheet of white,
She starts up from her chilling bier
In haste to welcome the New Year
With Earth's first flowers, a token bright.
Truly a garland of delight
Are snowdrops, bursting from the night
Of Winter's gloom, sad hearts to cheer,
When Nature wakes.
In groups they shine, and charm the sight,
Where sheltered garden-nooks invite;
And from their silver bells you hear
Faint echoes of the summons clear
Which stirs all earth, in depth and height,
When Nature wakes.
