University of Virginia Library

Dear Sir:

With everyone else engaging in
dirty politics around here, I am
interested how the Cavalier Daily
came to stoop to that level last
Wednesday, in the guise of a
humorous caption to the Letters
section of the editorial page.

The caption ("JP Running on
Shaky Platform") sounds like
something taken from the V.P.P.
flyer circulated the night before.
Certainly it was (1) unrelated
humorously or logically to any
letter in the newspaper that day;
(2) was not labelled an editorial
comment; (3) was not elaborated
upon or qualified in any way to
moderate its impact or to allow
rebuttal; and (4) was timed
suspiciously at best. It is the work
of a member of the newspaper
staff, not a letter-writer.

This sort of political
partisanship by the Cavalier Daily
on the first day of voting requires
an explanation, else impartial
reporting in the University's only
daily newspaper is put in question.
Perhaps one of your little midnight
gremlins scampering about the
composition room left the caption
behind him by mistake; but in that
case, you could arrange for him to
own up to it.
