Silent Comic To Perform At Lane
Tony Montanaro, a mime of
international acclaim, will perform
here Saturday, November 21. Mr.
Montanaro's performance at Lane
High School is sponsored by the
local chapter of the Virginia Museum
of Fine Arts.
Mr. Montanaro, a student of
Marcel Marceau, is a master of the
art of pantomime. He assumes the
role of a person, and, without a
single word, he communicates the
character, the thoughts and the
emotions of the person he is portraying.
From the first scene, the audience
becomes aware of a world of
invisible but tangible objects which
surround the performer. Ropes, ladders,
and walls are created by gestures
alone. Only one or two props
are used during the entire evening,
although the brightly colored costumes
change with each scene.
Mr. Montanaro's program "A
Mime's Eye View" was first performed
at the Gramercy Arts
Theatre in New York City. He has
recently appeared at Skidmore,
N.Y.U., Hofstra, the University of
Michigan, L.S.U., the University of
New Hampshire and several other
colleges where he was enthusiastically
received.
From a recent review: "Tony
Montanaro and his assistant,
Michael Henry, unraveled their
black-clothed bodies for one performance
at N.Y.U.'s Loeb Student
Center, and the result was a program
of delightful, sometimes
thoughtful mime sketches and
illusions . . . . the world created by
Messrs. Montanaro and Henry is
one that is constantly turning on its
creators.
Like everyone else, mimes are
going through the motions of
existence. The only difference
seems to be that the mimes -
especially the good ones - know it.
Montanaro knows it."
"A Mime's Eye View" will be
presented Saturday, November 21,
at 8:15 P.M. at Lane High School.
Tickets, which are $1.50 for students,
are on sale at Mincers, Newcomb
Hall, Leggetts, or at the door.
