U Hall Excitement

Despite a hostile home crowd, Coach Bill
Gibson's basketball team broke into the win
column Wednesday night with a resounding
victory over VMI. The win must have been a
big relief - it had begun to seem likely that it
would never come, and visions of effigies may
well have been dancing in Mr. Gibson's eyes.

Tomorrow night, however, the eagers face
a foe somewhat more formidable than the
Keydets. South Carolina was the pre-season
choice to succeed UCLA as national champion.
Despite an early loss to Tennessee, the
Gamecocks are still a talented club, a team
that averages 6'9" across the front line.
Arrayed against them will be a Virginia team
that features some promising second-year
men, probably a slow down offense, and nerve
in showing up.

Add to that the spice of last year's
University Hall upset, when Norm Carmichael
was ejected for trying to fight and Frank
McGuire was doused with bourbon as he left
the court, and the game has all makings of a
brawl, though it's difficult to predict which
coach is more likely to get baptized this year.

Added to this will be a post-game tag-team
wrestling match between three defensive
linemen from this year's football team and a
masked marvel who prefers to remain
anonymous; this pro-style match will precede
a varsity encounter with North Carolina. It
should be an interesting evening at University
Hall.
