Amazing

In the midst of the bitter divisiveness
engendered by the war and the moratorium,
as well as world affairs in general, we welcome
the relief occasioned by the world of sports.
The Cavaliers are doing well in all fall sports.
The football team is 3-1 and could take a big
step toward an ACC championship and
possibly a bowl game if it can take the
measure of North Carolina State in Scott
Stadium tomorrow. Virginia hasn't beaten the
Wolfpack since 1949; the drought has lasted
entirely too long.

The football team is not the only Virginia
squad to find itself in excellent position at
this juncture in its season. Coach Gordon
Burris' soccer team is undefeated thus far;
they come up against Duke this afternoon in
Durham and return to action Monday against
Randolph-Macon here at University Hall.
Coach Burris, who took over moribund groups
in tennis and soccer three years ago, produced
a 14-3 season on the courts last spring and
seems likely to duplicate this success this fall.

And then of course, there are the darlings
of just about everybody, the New York Mets,
who proved yesterday that just about
anything is possible when they took the World
Series from the poor Baltimore Orioles,
making Baltimore teams three-time losers
against the representatives of fair New York.
The Mets may have even put New York in a
frame of mind to re-elect John Lindsay,
which would be really amazing.

And if the Mets could go from 9th place to
the World Championship in one year, it ought
to be possible for the football and soccer
teams to go all the way as well. Then our cups
would surely run over. It's an exciting
prospect to contemplate.
