Mad Tom
A new secret society has arrived at
the University.
The Cavalier Daily received notice of
the formation of this group, which calls
itself "Mad Tom,' via a memo which
read as follows:
"In a letter from Monticello dated
simply 'May, 1969,' Mr. Jefferson
requested us to establish a society
'named not in silly or pompous fashion,
but rather after the meaningful causes to
which I dedicated my life.'
"Thus a society to honor Jeffersonians
who actively seek to further the
liberal ideals of our founder has been
formed. It shall be known as "Mad
Tom" after the historic epithet hurled at
Mr. Jefferson by the reactionaries of his
day.
"We would appreciate your announcing
to the University community the
establishment of this new honor society
founded to point the way back to the
original liberal traditions of our
founder."
The release was signed "Mad Tom."
