RETROSPECTION.
WRITTEN ON MICHAELMAS-DAY 1813.
This was the day, the sainted day,
On which my saintly wife,
The cheerer of my chequer'd way,
Was born to mortal life.
On which my saintly wife,
The cheerer of my chequer'd way,
Was born to mortal life.
But since she left this lower sphere,
(I must not say too soon)
Her natal day would now appear
To be the seventh of June.
(I must not say too soon)
Her natal day would now appear
To be the seventh of June.
For then, to crown her Christian worth,
Life to the soul was given;
And what we deem her death on earth,
Her birth-day was in heaven.
Life to the soul was given;
And what we deem her death on earth,
Her birth-day was in heaven.
