Old Photo Angers Fan;
Matmen Need Support

Dear Sir:

Congratulations to the Sports
Photography Staff for the fine
action picture in today's (2/23/71)
CD of the wrestling match against
N.C. State this past Saturday! Or is
it? A first glance shows the match
in the picture was taken at U. Hall
instead of Memorial Gym. A closer
look shows the mat the wrestlers
are on hasn't been used for dual
matches in several years.

The Virginia wrestler is wearing
a head guard that hasn't been seen
in at least four years around the
wrestling room and his opponent
looks as if he has no head guard on
(an NCAA rule was passed a couple
of years ago at least making the
wearing of head guards mandatory
because of the frequency of car
injuries). The crowd in the
background looks typical of
wrestling crowds about five or six
years ago.

A call to the CD office could
produce neither the date of the
picture nor information that there
was a CD photographer at the
match. If there was a photographer
at the match, could not a picture
have been put in today's paper?
The answer was yes. (A picture
taken one afternoon could be in the
next day's paper.)

I have never worked on a
newspaper but it seems to me that a
picture of Saturday's match would
have complimented the article.
Even better, a picture of Lou Pavia
pinning his opponent might have
gotten more people to read the
article rather than letting dull
teachers do the job.

Virginia has an excellent chance
of winning its first ACC Wrestling
Championship; the students are
behind the team and do come out
and support it. How about the CD
getting on the ball?
