Outing Club Offers Slide Show,
Opens Membership For Year
Tomorrow at 7:00 the Outing
Club will present a free slide show
entitled "Land Beyond Words," in
the South Meeting Room of
Newcomb Hall. The program will
be narrated by Lloyd Sumner, who
has travelled all over the U.S. and
Canada photographing areas of
natural beauty.
His presentation will include
popular and little known wildland
from the Everglades to Mt.
McKinley. Among the other areas
to be included will be the Sierra
Nevada, the Big Sur, the Redwoods,
the Bugaboo Spires, the Grand
Canyon, the Myakka River, and the
Maroon Bells.
Mr. Sumner graduated from the
University in 1967 and is better
known here for his pioneering work
in computer art. His interest in
wilderness photography developed
through his association with the
Outing Club.
The Outing Club is open to all
members (and former members) of
the University community. Its
primary purpose is to aid students
and faculty in their enjoyment of
our many natural areas. Typical
activities include whitewater
canoing, hiking, backpacking,
caving, downhill and cross-country
skiing, mountaineering, and rock-climbing.
Last year's Outing
activities include a skiing trip to
Canada over the Christmas
holidays, rock-climbing expeditions
in West Virginia and Pennsylvania,
and a surfing safari at the Maryland
seashore.
Members of the club will
instruct all interested beginners and
the club maintains enough
equipment so that almost any sport
can be attempted cheaply. All
interested persons are invited to the
meeting tonight at 7:30 in room 4C
of Newcomb Hall.
