...And Farewell

The care and feeding of The Cavalier Daily
is, quite naturally, a subject that concerns us
to an inordinate degree and we occasionally
compare notes with other journalists. It seems
like a long time ago that we sat in the offices
of the Village Voice and asked the editor how
he went about making his paper the lively
publication that it is. As it turned out, he
didn't really know, but we agreed that the
community a paper serves will, in the final
analysis, determine the quality and interest
that the paper maintains. About all you can
really do is try to stimulate and inform your
readers and let them take it from there. If
nobody hears the tree fall there really isn't
sound.

Well, the Village Voice man didn't hold
out much hope for us, based on his casual
knowledge of the University, but undaunted,
we came back to Charlottesville and decided
that we'd do what we could. Needless to say,
we've been daunted several times since then,
but we're still doing what we can, and the
University community has responded in a way
that the Village Voice would never have
believed. Take a good look at today's paper
and count the pages. Yet, six of them,
featuring contributions that we hope are
lively, informative, and even worth reading.
The University is becoming a community in
ferment, and we applaud the change. Hopefully
we can continue to catch some of it on
these pages. Since this is our last issue of the
year, we'd like to thank our contributors for
helping us to attain whatever heights we've
reached.

Good luck on your exams, and have a good
summer.
