Strong Scramble
Fullback Larry Schwartz
sustained a foot injury in the
opening moments of the second
half, and Virginia was down to only
13 men. But Virginia, playing
inspired ball, continued to
dominate the game as winger Alan
McAllister uncorked several long
runs and scored two tries. Furniss
made one conversion to complete
the scoring. The Virginia scrum, led
by Jim Hawkes and imperturbable
John Barbiere, who stands 6-11 and
about 300 lbs., controlled the
momentum of the match despite
being short-handed.
A Duke winger made a
spectacular 50-yard run in the
closing moments of the match as he
broke several hard Virginia tackles,
but he was unable to touch the ball
down after crossing the try line and
was not awarded the score - it
seems that in a gutsy tackle, which
he had broken on the 20-yard line,
he had sustained a broken shoulder
and several broken ribs.
