BLANDY FARM (STATE ROUTE 50)

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, the importance of the Blandy Experimental Farm, on the south side of State Route 50 in Clarke County, heretofore devised to the University of Virginia is recognized, and;
  • WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the University that a proposed new lane be constructed to Route 50 such that the lane will be located on the south (Blandy Farm) side of the existing highway, and;
  • WHEREAS, it is the University's understanding that this proposal is based, in part, on an assumption that serious damage will not thereby occur to property located on the south side of the highway;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia hereby records its concern and objects to the proposal for locating a new lane of Route 50 in Clarke County on the south side of the existing highway, a proposal which would require taking property from the Blandy Experimental Farm of the University of Virginia, thereby causing serious damage to the Farm, and;
  • RESOLVED FURTHER that particular objection is recorded because the proposed relocation would cause the destruction of an historic dry stone wall on the Blandy Farm, the wall being seven feet in height, extending for approximately one mile, and being of the type construction such that the wall would be virtually impossible to rebuild.
