LOVE

If Love were only kissing, then
Love were a sorry thing for men;
But Love is trying how to bless
A home with strength and tenderness;
And working hard to buy the bread,
And bonnets for a little head;
And daily bringing home a life
Of honour to an earnest wife;
And duly naming at the board
The style and mercy of the Lord;
And watching in the children's growth
The beauty of the marriage-oath;
And proving that a young desire,
Though flame, was consecrated fire.
If Love were only kissing, then
Love were a sorry thing for men.
