Famous Pennsylvania Ballet In Step With Classical Tradition

One Of Many Praised Companies Featured In This Year's Artists Series Programs

Incoming first year men from
such socially and culturally exciting
places as New York, Boston, and
Philadelphia may expect to find a
culturally poverty-stricken wasteland
when they come to Charlottesville.
But with them in mind, the University
Union and the McIntire Department
of Music have somewhat alleviated
Charlottesville's cultural
poverty.

This year the University Union's
Artist Series will open on Wednesday,
October 8 with the French
National Orchestra, Jean Martinon,
conducting. The orchestra is currently
on its third tour in the
United States. Recognized as one of
the world's leading symphonic organizations,
the French National
Orchestra will tour twenty cities.

"1776", the Broadway musical
about the United States' declaration
of independence from Britain,
will be the next performance in the
Artists Series on Monday, November
9. It was the first Broadway
musical ever to be performed at the
White House in its entirety.

In light of Mr. Jefferson,
"1776" should have a special relevance
to the University. However,
one might contend that "Hair"
which was supposed to be scheduled
for the Artist Series might
have had a greater relevance to the
University in the light of nudity.

On Thursday, December 10,
Birgit Nilsson, the incomparable soprano
from Sweden, best known
for her Wagnerian roles, will sing at
University Hall. With international
acclaim, she has Seen hailed as the
greatest operatic and recital personality
of our age.

Shakespeare, Ballet

Not only is there more to come,
but as a "special", the Series will
present the Oxford Cambridge
Shakespeare Company in "Hamlet"
on December 15 in Cabell Hall.
Their performance of "the Tempest"
last year in Charlottesville
was superb.

For ballet buffs, the Pennsylvania
Ballet, an American company
which cherishes the great traditions
of classical ballet, will perform here
on Monday, February 8. The Pennsylvania
Ballet has enjoyed coverage
in prominent news media such as
the New York Times Newsweek,
and Time magazine.

Romeros, Celedine Romero and
his three sons, Celin, Pepe, and
Angel will be here in Charlottesville
on Monday, March 1, not as what
might first be thought as a trapeze
act but as guitarists. They have
been called the "Royal Family of
Spanish Guitar."

The last performance in the Artists
Series will be on Wednesday,
April 14 with Pianist, Leonard
Pennario who has performed extensively
with many of the world's
greatest orchestras and who as a
recitalist has received international
acclaim for his lengthy annual tours
of America and Europe.

Tickets for the Artists Series are
available at Newcomb Hall. Season
tickets are $10.00.

For the more esoterically inclined,
there is the Tuesday Evening
Concert Series sponsored by the
Music Department. These concerts
tend almost exclusively toward
chamber music and recitals performed
by first rate ensembles.

Tuesday Evening Series

The series will open on October
13 with the world famous Juilliard
String Quartet. Following performances
include the Aeolian Chamber
Players on October 27, the
internationally known tenor, Stuart
Burrows, November 17, and pianist
Alegria Arce on December 1.

Iger Kipnis, renowned harpsichordist
and authority of the Baroque
will appear on January 12.
The British Intimate Opera Company,
February 2, and the Iowa
String Quartet, February 16.

The Series will conclude on
March 9 with "I Solisti Veneti" a
top notch chamber group of twelve
players. Tickets are available at Old
Cabell Hall and admission is by
Season Membership only, Student
membership is $7.50
