Vandalism
The University has never had a reputation
for quality athletic facilities. Scott Stadium is
old and small; the pool is a disgrace; and until
the arrival of University Hall, Memorial Gym
was hardly a fitting arena for collegiate
basketball. One thing the University has done
about it recently, however, is to construct a
high quality cross country course behind
University Hall. The Virginia course is so good,
in fact, that it could serve as a site for the
NCAA championships; it has been selected as
the site of the ACC cross-country championships
on November 10.
Unfortunately, a number of motorcycle
enthusiasts have found that the cross-country
course is a fine place to run their machines on
an autumn afternoon. The ruts they leave
behind are going to necessitate a major repair
job or perhaps total resurfacing before the
conference championships. Now we realize
that sylvan paths and trail bikes and autumn
afternoons seem to go together; but there are
miles of sylvan paths all over the state. And it
seems to us that these vandals could easily find
another venue for their sport. If they don't,
they could ruin the course permanently.
