Lawn Concert

Sunday's concert on the Lawn was an
excellent example of what can be done in the
way of entertainment on the Grounds.
Somehow the diverse elements that went into
it - hard rock, folk music, progressive jazz,
classical and pop offerings, Jeffersonian
surroundings, and collection for the Transition
Program - blended into a concert
which was appealing in its informality and
high calibre. Perhaps it was all due to the
absence of the frenetically commercial Big
Weekend atmosphere.

The University Union-PK German concert
scheduled Friday for the same site was less
fortunate. The sponsors' crack group of sound
technicians decided that the high winds which
blew Friday afternoon would make it
impossible to hear the Sandpipers, and the
concert was moved to Memorial Gym, causing
a substantial loss to the Union and PK. It's a
shame that Sunday's concert didn't have the
benefit of the same sound experts. If it had, it
probably would have moved to the Gym as
well, and nobody would have come, and the
$300. The concert netted for the Transition
Fund would have been lost.

Our thanks go to Paul Larsen, who
organized the event, and to the University
Concert Band, 88 Keys Wilson and his trio,
the Slithy Toves, the Serpentine Wall, Joyous
Cosmology, and Tracks, all of whom donated
their time. Amazingly enough, we even heard
them. We hope that the Lawn can be the site
more concerts of this nature in the future.
