Early Cavalier Tallies
Virginia scored in the first
minute of the A game by dint of a
35-yard penalty kick converted by
center Tom Furniss. Moments later
scrummer Jay Waldron collided
with the Duke fullback and had to
leave the field with a gashed
forehead that was treated in the
Emergency Room. There is n
substitution in this ancient and
honorable game for "hooligans" so
Virginia continued with 14 men.
Next, scrummer Terry Daniels,
who emerged from the match with
a gaping grin in lieu of a front
tooth, scored a try, and Furniss
made the conversion. Furniss also
made two penalty kicks giving
Virginia a 14-0 lead at halftime.
