Swimmers Return

Sporting an undefeated 2-0
mark, the Cavalier swimmers
make their home debut Friday
at 2:30 against the Indians of
William and Mary. Billed as
one of the finest swimming teams
the University has seen, they
will perform once again in their
water hole at the south end of
Memorial Gym for any interested
Wahoo not already
homeward bound.

David Williams started the
Cavaliers off with an 8-1 victory
over the visitors' Craig Miller.
The quick, aggressive wrestling of
the Cavaliers' lead man set the style
for Virginia during the entire
match.

As the score would indicate, Williams
completely dominated his
foe, coming close to a pin in the
third period.

Replacement Stars

Ed McClung, inserted at 130
pounds in place of Captain John
Shurberg, demonstrated the wisdom
of that decision with a 13
victory over Carolina's Tom
Guthrie. McClung used an advantage
in strength and leverage
over his opponent in scoring numerous
takedowns which had the
crowd of 700 roaring in appreciation.

John Pegues, who dropped down
to 137 to replace Jamie Christopher,
also scored his first collegiate
triumph, a 5-3 win over John
Stacy of UNC. Pegues' victory
gave Virginia a 9-0 lead.

But in the 145 pound bout,
Carolina began to fight back. Virginia's
Chuck Wescott allowed a
7-2 lead to evaporate in the last
two periods and was fortunate to
salvage a draw with the Tar Heels'
Dave Barnes, 7-7.

T. Moore Shines

Through the middle and heavier
weights Carolina's comeback
attempt was thwarted only by a
pair of pins by two of Virginia's
finest competitors. The first came
at the hands of Tom Moore at
152. After a first period in which
neither man scored, Moore reversed
Carolina's Jenks Pressly in
the opening moments of the
second.

Then Moore quickly followed up
his advantage to pin his man within
45 seconds of the reversal. The
match was his second victory of
the season, and it brought the
score to 16-2 in favor of the
Cavaliers.

Younger brother Ted Moore
found that he had a hard act to
follow and succumbed to the visitors'
Carver Rudolph 15-7 in the
160 pound class. Carolina continued
its comeback efforts with
a 4-2 win by Bob Steele over Virginia's
Ric Evans at 167 pounds.

First-year man Paul Bochm had
the misfortune to debut against
Carolina's best, senior Fred
Priester at 177. Bochm, giving
away four years of experience, was
never in contention. Priester's 4-0
decision gave Carolina 3 more
points and cut the lead to 16-11.

This gave Carolina's Fred Kelly
a chance to tie the match by pinning
Rick Constantine, but Virginia's
middle guard came through with a
pin of his own in the second period,
finalizing the score at 21-11.
