EPIGRAM CXCVIII.

[In Egypt once, the great, we're told]

SUB JUDICE LIS EST.

In Egypt once, the great, we're told,
No claim to public praise could hold,
Till umpires, at their death decreed
To all their merit, all it's meed.

302

To make men honest, a wise way;—
Provided still, some means they knew,
To keep those umpires honest too!
