Virginia Folk Singer Will Appear In ACLU Concert

John Bassette, leading Virginia
singer, song writer and recording
artist, will appear here in the
Newcomb Hall Ballroom on Wednesday,
April 29, at 8:00 p.m., in a
concert sponsored by the ACLU of
Virginia.

Bassette, 28, is a warm and
dynamic entertainer with a record
of performances in 38 states and
four foreign countries. His credits
include folk festivals at Newport,
Carnegie Hall and Cambridge, England,
club dates along the Eastern
seaboard and in London and
Canada, as well as numerous performances
at colleges and universities
around the world.

Bassette played a leading role in
the Sammy Davis, Jr. production of
"Golden Boy" in Chicago and
London. He has also made an award
winning show for educational television.

Bassette claims his least-known
"credit" is a five minute spot on
television's "Hollywood Palace" in
1969 which was preempted by a
Nixon campaign speech.

Critics of leading music publications
and newspapers have praised
Bassette's high-powered performances,
citing him as an amusing
and moving entertainer.

A native of Hampton, Virginia,
he attended VCU in Richmond
where he got his start professionally
at local coffee houses and campuses.
He now makes his home in
Richmond with his wife and two
children, but spends about eight
months of the year on the road.

He recently signed a recording
contract with United Artists, with
an album hopefully slated to appear
before Christmas.
