New CD Policy
In compliance with University policy on
housing and discrimination therein, The
Cavalier Daily has adopted a new policy
regarding classified ads for housing—whether
sale, rental, or sub rental—for students. Effective
today, any person who wants to place
such an ad in the paper must sign the following
statement: "I hereby certify that the
advertisement which I am placing in The
Cavalier Daily is for a facility in which
any responsible student of the University
will be allowed to reside, regardless of race,
color, religion, or natural origin." A similar
statement that all such ads are for nondiscriminatory
facilities will appear at the top
of the "For Rent" section of the classified
ads beginning tomorrow.
We have adopted this policy in an attempt
to protect any students who might
be discriminated against from the embarrassment
of being turned down for residence
in housing which has been advertised in their
student newspaper. All students pay activities
fees, which support The Cavalier Daily, and
so we feel that all students should be assured
that anything they read in The Cavalier
Daily applies to them as well as to their
fellow students.
We hope any violations of this policy will
be made known to us so that we can prevent
the violator from using our columns
again. We realize that this is a move we
should have made long ago. We thank Neil
McBride, Law I, for suggesting it to us now.
