ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WALKER COWEN MEMORIAL PRIZE

  • The following resolution was adopted:
  • RESOLVED that there is hereby established in memory of the late Walker Cowen an award to be known as The Walker Cowen Memorial Prize, which is to take the form of a cash award (amount to be determined) and an appropriately inscribed certificate. The award is to be made for an outstanding original work of scholarship in Eighteenth Century Studies in history, literature, philosophy, or the arts published by the University Press of Virginia.
  • The award shall be made on a biennial basis and will be withheld unless original scholarship meriting the award is offered to the University Press of Virginia and accepted for publication during the biennium.
  • The original work of scholarship for which the award is to be made will be determined by a distinguished panel of three scholars appointed by the Provost at least one of whom should not be affiliated with Virginia institutions of higher education, none of whom are members of the Committee for the University Press of Virginia during the biennium for which the selection is made, and all of whom have an interest in Eighteenth Century Studies. The members of the panel shall receive reasonable compensation for their work.
  • Manuscripts to be submitted to the panel for its consideration should be selected by the Director of the University Press of Virginia.
