Tom Wolfe

After losing in rapid succession
James Taylor, Huey Newton,
Bernadette Devlin and the Allman
Brothers, the University Union
looks like its next scheduled
speaker, Tom Wolfe, may actually
appear.

Unradically chic Mr. Wolfe,
of Kandy-Kolored-Electric-Kool-Aid
Mau-mau fame, is set to speak
in Cabell Hall on Wednesday night
Sept. 29, at 7:30.

Richmond-born Mr. Wolfe was
graduated from Washington and
Lee University, completed his
graduate work in American Studies
at Yale, then went on to become a
Latin American correspondent for
the Washington Post. He later
worked as a reporter for the New
York Herald Tribune and the New
York World Tribune. In 1961 he
received Front Page awards for
humor and foreign news reporting
from the Washington Newspaper
Guild.

Mr. Wolfe's talents are not
limited to writing; he is also an
accomplished artist. His drawings,
with which he sometimes illustrates
his books, have been exhibited in a
one man show in New York's
Maynard Walker gallery.

Although The Kandy Kolored
Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby

was Mr. Wolfe's first book it was
not until The Electric Kool-Aid
Acid Test
that he gained popular
acclaim. The book chronicled the
birth of the drug culture, following
Ken Kesey from his California
LSD experiments through his
school bus odyssey. His latest
work, Radical Chic tears into the
"beautiful people" for taking on
radical causes in the same manner
in which they don the latest
fashion.

Of Mr. Wolfe's first book Kurt
Vonnegut, Jr. proclaimed "Verdict:
Excellent book by a genius.." Mr.
Vonnegut will also be making an
appearance at the University in
December.

Presently Mr. Wolfe is
contributing to Esquire and New
York Magazines his latest
appearance having been in the pages
of Esquire where he is cited as one
of the authorities on Gloria "She
sure hasn't made it us as writer"
Steinham.

Tickets for Mr. Wolfe's
"Illustration Talk" may be
purchased at Mincora Pipe Shop,
the Newcomb Hall main desk, or at
the door. The cost is $1.50.
