The New Day: Sonnets | ||
26
XXVI.
[Grand sounds the verse when genius wields the pen]
Grand sounds the verse when genius wields the pen,And this alone all honour can impart
To wondrous acts of women and of men.
Though charity's firm hand control the heart,
What mixed emotions human breasts befall;
Even love grows harmful with a good intent!
With the same hand she hangs the criminal
And offers him the saving sacrament!
Far lovelier scenes pure poetry rehearses;
As women taintless in the thick of vice:
A theme like this may breathe in loving verses
The evil from the evil to entice.
Yet virtue is no slave—not given to lure
The vile, but its own safety to assure.
