The Carolina squad, which
was rated eighth in national
polls before the season started,
won five of six singles matches
and two of three doubles
confrontations.

In the number one singles
match, Fred McNair had little
trouble in beating Doug
Waterman 6-0,6-3. At number
two, Carolina's Jim Corn found
the going rough but prevailed
over Jim Ratliff, 7-6,6-1.

In the third spot, Richard
McKee of UNC turned back
Rick Smith, 6-4,6-2, while Hoyt
Murray of Virginia lost a
tough, well-played match to
Forrest Simmons, 6-3,2-6,3-6 in
the fourth position.
