A Vote For Tech

Come September 12 of this year, the
Cavalier football team may well be taking the
field for a contest that will beef its schedule
up to 11 games; recent legislation by the
NCAA authorized such a move in an effort to
help schools whose athletic programs can use
the added revenue from such a game. It
appears likely that the University will allow
Athletic Director Steve Sebo to schedule
another game; Virginia's athletic finances are
as hurting as anyone else's.

The game will almost certainly be held
away from home. There are already six clashes
scheduled for Scott Stadium next fall, and
home games are generally less profitable than
going away to play before a big crowd. Right
now, the football staff is dickering with
Georgia and Virginia Tech in an attempt to set
up the extra game. The Cavaliers will probably
wind up playing the school that guarantees
the bigger cut of the proceeds.

That will probably be Georgia - the
Bulldogs have a bigger stadium and draw
bigger crowds. We believe that there are,
however, mitigating circumstance that ought to
decide the issue in favor of Virginia Tech. In
the first place, Blacksburg is a lot closer than
Athens, and more students would be able to
see the game. Secondly, the Hokies are
notorious for starting their season with a
couple of losses, an advantage our beleaguered
squad could certainly use. Third, a game with
Tech might not be quite so enumerative in
itself, but it would stir up enthusiasm and
publicity within the state, which would hypo
the attendance at ensuing home games more
than a probable loss to Georgia.

So if there is to be an extra game, (and we
hope there is) and if the Athletic Department
cares about what anyone else says (which we
hope it does) let it be with Virginia Tech.
