Concert Series Starts
Strings Fill Cabell Tonight
The sounds of the Guarneri
String Quartet will fill Cabell Hall
tonight as the new season of the
Tuesday Evening Concert Series
begins in the annual attempt to
bring culture to Charlottesville.
The Guarneri String Quartet has
received international acclaim since
its debut in 1965. They have played
to capacity audiences at colleges
throughout the United States and
Canada, plus making successful
appearances at the Festival of Two
Worlds, the Berkshire Festival, the
Mozart Festivals at Lincoln Center,
the Gulbenkian Festival in Portugal,
and the Athens Festival.
Group "Superb"
The group is composed of
Arnold Steinhardt on first violin,
John Dalley on second violin,
Michael Tree on viola, and David
Soyer on cello. They have been
described by the New York Times
as "superior on the world's stages."
Tonight's program, beginning at
8:15 p.m., consists of Mozart's
"Adagio and Fugue in C minor,"
Beethoven's "Quartet in E flat
major," and Ravel's "Quartet in F
major."
Critics are in agreement that the
Guarneri String Quartet is superb.
They call the group's tone "like
satin," the sense of style
"masterly," and the performance
on the whole like an "epic, a novel
in tone."
Tickets On Sale
Beginning in December, the
Quartet will be making a series of
four performances in New York,
where they made their debut four
years ago.
Tickets for the Tuesday Evening
Concert Series are available at the
Main Desk of Newcomb Hall at the
rate of $7.50 for students and $10
for non-students. Admission to
tonight's performance is by season
ticket only, and no single
performance tickets will be sold
throughout the season. Eight
concerts will be given this season,
with the average price per concert
being less than one dollar.
Besides the Guarnari String
Quartet, other performances will be
given by pianist Peter Frank,
guitarist Charlie Byrd, the Berlin
Philharmonic Octet, the Marlboro
Trio, the Renaissance Quartet, the
Hungarian String Quartet, and
cellist Dimitry Markevitch.
