A Good Example
Tomorrow night's "Mid-Winter Jazz
Festival" in Cabell Hall should be an event
"not to miss." A slate of performers of such
talent and acclaim is a rare treat for
Charlottesville, and a show featuring so many
noted jazz musicians at once would be a rare
treat anywhere.
More important than the quality of the
concert, however, are its goals. Sponsored by
the Human Relations Council, it is a benefit
affair for the NAACP Freedom Fund, which
furthers "the cause of justice through legal
and educational efforts," the Legal Assistance
Fund, formed to assist low-income families in
paying for the legal costs of appeals and
housing evictions, and the Human Relations
Council's scholarship fund, which is used to
pay the $10 application fees for
low-income applicants to the University and
to provide financial aid. Such a benefit is
especially timely and meaningful in view of
the recent evictions in Charlottesville and the
current effort to recruit more black students
for the University.
We encourage everyone to attend the
festival, both for its aesthetic value and
because of its humanitarian aims. We hope
those who are unable to attend will buy
tickets anyway to indicate their support of
those aims.
