The Other Other Side

Monday night, a two-page mimeographed
flyer entitled "The Other Side" was circulated
through the dormitories and the fraternity
houses. It is the creation of four
students and states the case for adoption
of the new Student Council constitution.

In the first paragraph of this propaganda
sheet, the authors stated that "the arguments
against the new constitution have
been amply aired by a number of articles
in The Cavalier Daily, all by the same
reporter." The inference seemed to be that
our stand on the constitution was reflected
in our news coverage, and that this was the
personal campaign of one member of the
staff.

We think that the gentlemen who wrote
this should read The Cavalier Daily a bit
more closely. On Thursday of last week,
we printed an article by Rod MacDonald,
our Student Council reporter in which
Council president Ed Ford expressed his
opposition to the constitution. Then on
Friday, the same reporter interviewed a
councilman who favored the constitution,
and this article was published with equal
prominence on the page.

There were also two editorials, written by
Mr. MacDonald, in opposition to the
passage of the new constitution. The inference
in the circular that all this is the
opinion of just one member of the staff
is ludicrous. Whatever appears in the
editorial column of The Cavalier Daily,
regardless of the author, is the official position
of the newspaper and reflects the opinion
of the Editor-in-Chief and, to a very great
extent, the whole staff.

The Cavalier Daily urges all students to
vote against the new constitution today.
We cannot allow student government at the
University to become shackled for a
semester or more with a document which
would require so much revision that the
Council might well never get around to any
other business.
