The New Dean
And The Old

While there was a heart-breaking and hard-fought
loss at Scott Stadium Saturday, there
was happier news a few hundred yards
away in Clark Hall, where the School of
Law learned of the appointment of Monrad
G. Paulsen of Columbia University as its
new dean, effective July 1968.

Although the University broke precedence
in going outside the Law School for a dean,
we are indeed fortunate to have coming to
Charlottesville a legal scholar of Mr.
Paulsen's reputation and international experience.

The University got more than it bargained
for, in a sense, for accompanying the new
dean and John B. Minor Professor of Law
is Mrs. Paulsen, who becomes an associate
professor of pediatrics in the School of
Medicine.

Although the Law School will miss Hardy
C. Dillard in his capacity as dean, we are
happy to see that he will remain on the
faculty as James Monroe Professor of Law,
teaching the first-year contracts course that
has been a memorable part of the training
of a generation of the University's law
graduates.
