BUNYAN, John (1628-1688):

one of the greatest influences on popular CHRISTIAN PIETY of all time. A PURITAN PREACHER and writer, he was frequently imprisoned for his radical CHRISTIAN and political BELIEFS. While in prison he wrote Grace Abounding (1666), The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), and The Holy War (1682). These classical works have been translated into many languages and have had a significant effect on popular religious and political movements throughout the world.
